Amit Shah urges Bengal voters to bring change in 2026 elections during Petrapole visit

Union Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Petrapole border in West Bengal on Saturday, where he addressed a gathering of party workers and local residents, urging them to bring about a significant change in the upcoming 2026 assembly elections. This visit is part of the BJP's strategy to strengthen its foothold in West Bengal, particularly after the party's disappointing performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where it failed to secure a significant number of seats.

During his speech, Shah sharply criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging widespread corruption and mismanagement of financial resources allocated by the central government. He highlighted that under the UPA government, Bengal received only ₹2.09 lakh crore in financial assistance over a span of ten years. In stark contrast, he stated that the BJP-led central government has allocated ₹7.74 lakh crore to Bengal from 2014 to 2024. Shah claimed that despite the substantial funding, the benefits have not reached the intended recipients due to alleged embezzlement and inefficiency within the TMC government.

Shah also addressed the critical issue of illegal infiltration in Bengal, stating, "I am telling the people of Bengal that we will only breathe easy once we stop infiltration. Only when this infiltration stops will peace return to Bengal." His statement reflects the BJP's longstanding position on border security and immigration, emphasizing the need for a firm stance against illegal migrants. He promised that if the BJP comes to power in 2026, it will take decisive action to secure the borders and restore peace in the state.

In addition to financial issues, Shah discussed the Ayushman Bharat scheme, which offers healthcare coverage of up to ₹5 lakh for eligible families. He reassured the audience that West Bengal residents would receive the same benefits as those in other states if the BJP were to form the government in 2026. Shah's emphasis on healthcare access aligns with the BJP's broader agenda to improve public welfare and health services across India.

The backdrop of Shah's speech included the upcoming by-elections scheduled for November 13, where six assembly constituencies will participate in the polls. Although he did not delve deeply into these immediate elections, his focus on the long-term goal of the 2026 assembly elections underscored the BJP's commitment to regaining political ground in Bengal. By framing the TMC as a party of corruption and inefficiency, Shah aimed to mobilize support for the BJP's vision of a prosperous and secure West Bengal.
